Work has started on new lifts to make Pokesdown station step free for the first time.

The Bournemouth station will get two customer lifts, giving step free access to both platforms for residents, visitors, passengers with reduced mobility, parents with pushchairs and people travelling with luggage.

The project is being delivered by South Western Railway and Network Rail Wessex, with support from the Department for Transport and UK Government as the railway moves towards Great British Railways.

Representatives from the rail industry, local campaigners and elected figures gathered at the station today, where Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes broke the first ground with Lawrence Bowman, Managing Director of GBR South Western.

Tom Hayes said the work had been "a long time coming" and, as the son of two disabled parents, said it mattered that everyone could "travel with dignity" from Pokesdown station.

Construction is expected to continue until early 2028, while the station stays open for customers, and further changes are planned with AFC Bournemouth for people heading to football matches from the local area.
