Dorset Police said the incident happened at The Rising Sun in East Street at around quarter past nine on Saturday evening. The woman, who is aged in her 40s, had seen a man shouting at another woman before she went to speak to him.
Officers said the man then grabbed her by the throat. Other people in the pub intervened, and the man left the premises.
A CCTV image has now been issued as officers try to identify a man they want to speak to as part of their enquiries.
Police Constable William Forster, of East Dorset police, said officers had launched a "full investigation" and obtained footage of a man they would like to identify.
He added: "I would urge anyone with information regarding this man’s identity to please contact us."
