The Salvation Army church on Latimer Road has opened its annual Christmas Present Appeal, which asks local people to donate new unwrapped toys for children whose families are under pressure from food, heating and bills.
Last year, more than 1,000 gifts were distributed through the Winton appeal with support from residents and businesses, and the church says the rising cost of living may mean more families need help.
Church leader Claire Hill said some families are “wondering how they’ll get through the week”, and described the appeal as a way for the community to give to people who “have next to nothing”.
The donated gifts will be sorted and shared with children and families in the area through local groups, schools and social services, so support reaches households that have been referred locally.
Suggested items include educational toys, baby clothes, bath toys, books, dolls, action figures, sports equipment, clothing, toiletries, gloves, scarves, hats, hair accessories and vouchers for older children, and the Latimer Road church is accepting donations until December.
