Repairs to Winton Library have been approved after concerns over mould and building safety.
Listed building consent has been granted for work at the Wimborne Road library, covering repairs to leaded and timber windows and doors, along with stonework, brickwork and external decoration across the site.
Documents submitted with the application said failing windows were allowing mould to develop, which could affect staff and users, including children, older people and others susceptible to respiratory issues at the library. The front lunette windows had deteriorated to a point where the building could be vulnerable to vandalism or trespass, and one window was described as no longer ‘wind or watertight’.
A leaking rooflight will be removed and covered over after being described as a ‘significant health and safety risk’ to people on the roof, according to documents that supported the application.
Other approved work includes rebuilding part of a parapet and the boiler flue, repairing cracked masonry, reusing original bricks and stone where possible, matching replacement materials, and starting within three years under conditions that protect the building’s ‘historic character’.
