Weymouth is planning a new air festival which could offer an alternative to Bournemouth's cancelled event.

Organisers at local radio station Radio AIR want to bring military and civilian flying displays to Weymouth between 18 and 20 August 2027, alongside music on the beach, family activities and possibly drone displays.

With Bournemouth Air Festival still on pause, the organisers believe Weymouth could offer an alternative for people who miss the Bournemouth event, which drew more than half a million visitors in 2024.

Radio AIR says the proposals have received initial support from Dorset Council and Weymouth Town Council, with David Walton appointed Flying Display Director and requests submitted to military and civilian flying organisations.

However, the event is not confirmed and would need sponsorship, volunteers and official approvals before going ahead, with operations lead Claudia Webb saying "public safety, operational feasibility and the needs of the town" remain central.

Radio station Chief executive Jamie Lyones says organisers are "not pretending this is a done deal", and has called on local businesses, schools, charities and residents to support fundraising and volunteer recruitment.
