Wareham Town Council is exploring a temporary service after the North Street Post Office closed.

The branch at 12 North Street has shut while The Neighbourhood Centre Post Office in Canford Heath remains closed, and together the closures have added to concern in Mid Dorset and North Poole after Lloyds Bank closed locally earlier this year.

Vikki Slade MP has asked for an urgent meeting with senior Post Office officials to discuss short term cover and future plans, and she described the two closures as “extremely disappointing”.

She said many people rely on Post Offices for everyday banking and access to cash, and said the nearest alternatives in Carey and Corfe Castle are “not practical” for many residents because they are 1.3 kilometres and more than seven kilometres away.

Wareham Town Council is looking at a temporary satellite option at the Town Hall to give residents a banking and post office service in the town centre while new operators are sought.

Local Councillor Beryl Ezzard said the Wareham community had faced frustration and disappointment, and said recent notice that the closure would be long term meant another franchise “will take months”.
