The Bell in Pokesdown has closed for a refurbishment before reopening as a sports pub.

The Bournemouth pub is being fitted with several screens, a new sound system and flexible tiered seating as part of Marston’s Grandstand format, with the beer garden also set to gain TV screens - representing a significant investment of £280,000.

The venue is asking local sports teams and residents to share photographs and memorabilia so its walls can show Bournemouth sporting achievements from past and present, alongside fixtures from football, rugby, cricket, tennis, Formula One, darts and horse racing.

Operations manager Mark McGrath said the pub would have “food and drink offers and events”, adding that the team wants “as many local people” as possible to feature on its walls.

When it reopens on 4 November, dartboards and pool tables will return, with new leagues and free-to-play sessions planned, while a Match Day Menu will add chicken wings, nachos and burgers.
