Dozens of University Hospitals Dorset staff, friends and relatives completed the Teddy Bear Trek on Saturday 19 September, walking more than 12km from Poole Hospital to the Royal Bournemouth Hospital, where the new unit is due to open in spring 2027.
The group wore bright charity shirts, carried teddy bears and were joined by a colleague in an inflatable bear costume, while people passing and hospital colleagues cheered them along the route.
The money will support the Do It for the Kids campaign, which is funding extra items for children and young people who will use the future unit, including comforting spaces, colourful artwork, equipment, seating and specialised toys.
Dr Fiona Hignett, consultant paediatrician and transformation lead for Children’s Health, said the move to Bournemouth was a “once in a generation opportunity”, with “children, young people and families” central to the design.
Janine Golding, community fundraiser for University Hospitals Dorset NHS Charity, said “every step taken and pound raised” would help provide extras that go beyond NHS funding for children, young people and their families.
