Two student housing schemes have been approved as part of plans for Bournemouth town centre.

Planning permission has been granted by BCP Council for 105 purpose built student homes at 23 Hinton Road, and another 79 at 40 to 44 Holdenhurst Road, both within walking distance of shops and leisure facilities.

Stonehaven Group said placing students in the commercial core would support retailers, cafes and hospitality venues through more regular footfall, while helping reduce pressure on family housing in nearby residential areas.

The approved schemes sit alongside work already under way in Glenfern Road, where a 1960s building is being overhauled to provide 157 student units and new leisure, entertainment and food and drink spaces.

Other local projects include Fairlight, a completed development of 37 flats in Westcliff, an 1880s building at 34 West Overcliff Drive being converted into 10 apartments, and work at 8 Meyrick Park Crescent.

Managing director Steven Beales said Bournemouth has “enormous potential” and added that the aim is to bring underused sites back into use while creating homes and long term economic activity in the town.
