The service ends on 27 September at Sandbanks, Bournemouth East, Bournemouth West and Boscombe East after a warm summer that brought large numbers of people to the coast and kept lifeguards busy with rescues, first aid and casualty care.
Lifeguards also reunited lost children with their families and taught water safety in schools. Ed Stevens, the RNLI’s regional lifeguard lead for the South East, described it as “one of the busiest and most demanding seasons” for the service.
With beach patrols ending, the RNLI advises coastal visitors to carry a way to call for help and tell someone where they are going. Anyone in difficulty in the water should try to float, control their breathing and call for help.
If someone else is in trouble, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard, tell them to float and throw them something that floats. RNLI lifeboat stations continue to provide a 24-hour search and rescue service throughout the year.
