The Poole Library and Customer Service Hub site, which has been closed since August 26, is now expected to reopen on Monday, October 19 while work continues to remove reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete, known as RAAC, from the roof.
Contractors found nesting gulls in part of the work area, and BCP Council said that this restricted access to sections of the roof and affected the construction programme, adding three weeks to the original timetable.
Councillor Andy Martin, the cabinet member responsible for libraries, said he knew residents would be "disappointed" by the delay and apologised for the inconvenience, adding that circumstances "outside of our control" meant contractors needed more time.
Saturday access to Poole Library will continue while the repairs are completed, and items can also be returned through the box outside the library entrance or at any BCP library.
Residents who need Citizens Advice support can visit the team at the United Reformed Church near the former Poole Civic Centre, while other local libraries, including Hamworthy, Oakdale, Parkstone, Branksome and Broadstone, remain open.
