Poole Bridge is set for structural repairs and repainting from 11 January 2027, meaning closure for 10 months.
The closure was announced by BCP Council last month, and more details of the work have been announced.
The repairs will tackle corrosion on the bridge, which has linked communities across Poole Harbour since 1927, and BCP Council says the scheme is intended to extend the crossing’s life and reduce unplanned repairs.
The upgrades include repainting the structure after an ageing coating made from rubber based materials, which was applied around 25 years ago, is removed through a specialist sandblasting process before affected steelwork is repaired.
The council says a large protective enclosure will cover the lifting arms while painting takes place, and the enclosure will protect harbour waters and provide controlled conditions for the new teal coating.
Twin Sails and Poole Bridge support more than 20,000 journeys a day when they are at their busiest, and Councillor Andy Hadley said the bridge remains “one of the most important transport links across the harbour”.
Councillor Hadley said carrying out planned maintenance now would make sure Poole Bridge continues to serve “residents, businesses and visitors”, and Octavius Infrastructure is expected to deliver the work over about 10 months.
