At least 10 Poole arts staff are training to paddle around Brownsea Island.

The Lighthouse team will use kayaks, paddleboards and a support boat on Saturday 31 October as it launches the venue’s Big Christmas Appeal, which funds tickets for people who may not otherwise get to see live events.

Development Coordinator George Rogers said the challenge would help bring live arts and entertainment to people in the community, whether staff complete the route “by kayak, paddleboard or even in the support boat”.

Last year, four Lighthouse staff ran the Bournemouth Half Marathon for the same appeal, and the annual campaign raises money to provide thousands of theatre, music and cinema tickets for local groups.

The appeal can support young carers, looked after children, families who rely on foodbanks, children receiving life changing cancer treatment and older people who are living in isolation across the year.

Jo Sharkey, from the Poole based Lewis Manning Hospice Care, said tickets gave families the chance to “escape” for a few hours from difficulties they had faced during the year.
