A new anaerobic digestion facility at Eco Sustainable Solutions has officially opened, with the capacity to process more than 50,000 tonnes of food waste a year and produce enough biomethane to heat around 7,000 homes.

Built within the company’s Eco Park, which covers 40 acres, the plant feeds renewable gas directly into the local network and also creates biofertiliser rich in nutrients for agriculture, giving the area another way to recycle unwanted food.

The facility was commissioned earlier this year following construction that began in 2024, creating 50 construction jobs and 6 permanent operator roles, while planning permission for its development had been granted more than a decade ago.

Simon Boyd, Vice President of Dorset Chamber and Managing Director of Christchurch company REIDsteel, officially opened the facility and said he was “absolutely stunned by what this plant can do”.

Eco Managing Director Justin Dampney called it a “significant milestone” for the company, which also processes other types of waste for BCP Council and Dorset Council and employs 53 people across its operations.
