A man has died following an incident near Bournemouth Pier on Sunday afternoon.

Dorset Police said it received a report at 4.13pm on 4 October that a man required medical attention on Bournemouth beach, with emergency services attending before he was pronounced deceased at the scene.

Local resident James Edward Lees told the Bournemouth Echo that people at the beach attempted to save the man, while he ran to collect a defibrillator and also contacted the ambulance service.

Mr Lees said: “I ran to get the defibrillator,” adding that he had seen the situation developing while sitting nearby and had then joined efforts to help.

He said several people contacted the emergency services, explaining: “Luckily, loads of people phoned,” before describing how he ran to collect the equipment needed at the scene.

Dorset Police confirmed the man’s family has been informed and said his death is not being treated as suspicious, adding: “Our thoughts are with the man’s family and friends at this very difficult time.”
