Peter Cooper has become Labour’s first member of Poole Town Council after winning Hamworthy East, following the resignation of Reform UK councillor Daniel Bleeze two months into his term. Labour has taken the Hamworthy East seat on Poole Town Council after a by election.
The vacancy was created when Reform UK councillor Daniel Bleeze resigned two months into his term, after he had won the seat in May with 779 votes, ahead of Labour’s Peter Cooper on 387.
Peter Cooper won the latest vote with 476 votes, while Reform UK candidate John Sheldon finished on 453, making Councillor Cooper the first and only Labour member of Poole Town Council.
Councillor Cooper, who also sits on Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole Council, said he was “really pleased” and wanted to focus on residents and local spending decisions because “it’s about localism”.
Mr Sheldon said the contest had been “well fought” and that Reform UK had not found the 23 votes needed to win, while the BCP Green Party congratulated Peter Cooper after the result and thanked supporters of its candidate, Yasmin Clewes.
