The refurbishment is part of BCP Council’s Plan for Play, which is improving more than 100 play areas across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole with a focus on better access for children of different needs and abilities.
Designs have been published after work involving the council’s green spaces team, Diverse Abilities, children, young people and families, with Councillor Andy Hadley saying "Inclusivity has been at the heart" of the plans.
The new layout includes wheelchair accessible equipment throughout, including a ramped playboat inspired by Hamworthy’s maritime heritage, sensory features on the deck, a double and triple slide, a wheelchair transferable roundabout and accessible water play.
A sensory and quiet zone will also include communication aids, braille panels and a storytelling chair, while inclusive picnic seating is planned for families using the upgraded play area together.
Clare Rochford, from Diverse Abilities, said access to inclusive play and community spaces "can make a huge difference" to children with disabilities, while Councillor Sandra Moore said she looked forward to seeing local families use the upgraded area.
