The Bournemouth town centre scheme began in May as part of BCP Council’s bus service improvement plan, which is backed by government funding and is intended to modernise Gervis Place and improve public transport infrastructure.
Plans include resurfacing the road, putting in new bus shelters, upgrading real time information displays and widening the footway, which the council says gives more space for people using the area every day.
Councillor Andy Hadley said the work would modernise a “key gateway into Bournemouth town centre”, with larger shelters, improved seating, better accessibility features, enhanced CCTV and real time passenger information for passengers.
He said the widened section is restricted to buses, taxis and cyclists, so the changes do not reduce road space for most motorists and have been designed with local bus operators.
Councillor Hadley added that the scheme is “progressing well and remains on track”, with work between Westover Road and Hinton Road due to continue until the end of February while final elements are completed.
