BCP Council says the Bournemouth town centre scheme is “progressing well” after work began in May under its Bus Service Improvement Plan, with temporary bus stops in place while services use diversions.
The project includes changes to roads, bus routes and pedestrian areas, with 72 per cent of consultation respondents backing aims such as improved bus journey times and two way bus movements on Old Christchurch Road.
The council update says new bus shelters have been installed and kerbs have been put in place, widening the northern pavement ahead of a full depth reconstruction of the Gervis Place carriageway.
Councillor Andy Martin said the work is “on time and on budget”, with 3 larger shelters now installed featuring glass roofs, full width seating with armrests and clear views of approaching buses.
The improvements are funded by government as part of measures intended to encourage public transport use, including raised kerbs, better real time information, CCTV, new crossing points and wider footways.
