Dorset Council has agreed the scheme for the building between Blandford and Sixpenny Handley, which has been known as The Inn on the Chase and the Cashmoor Inn and has stood empty for five years.
The pub sits in the Cranborne Chase National Landscape area, and the approved plans will convert the existing building into four homes, while two more homes will be built on the site.
Parish councillors had previously argued that the pub could trade again, despite years of losses, but on the latest application they focused on safe access from the 50mph road near a crossroads.
Estate agent documents submitted to the council said there had been only three viewings in two years, with “no offers made”, and said the building was “deteriorating throughout the period”.
The site was also the scene of a January 2009 fire at the Cashmoor Inn which saw 30 people safely evacuated while firefighters stayed there for more than four hours.
