The crash happened at around 1pm on Friday 11 September on the westbound carriageway of the A31, close to Ameysford roundabout. It involved a beige Nissan Qashqai and a blue Range Rover.
Dorset Police said the collision was not reported at the time because it was first understood that nobody involved had been injured and no police help was needed.
A passenger in the Qashqai, who was a man in his 80s from the Eastleigh area of Hampshire, became seriously unwell on Sunday 13 September. He died in hospital on Sunday 20 September, and police were notified by HM Coroner for Hampshire on Wednesday 23 September.
Police Constable Jack Honnywill, from the Roads Policing Team, said: "Our thoughts are very much with the family, friends and loved ones of the man who sadly died."
He said officers were working to establish the full circumstances and asked anyone who saw what happened to come forward. He added: "I am also keen to hear from anyone who was travelling in the vicinity and may have captured relevant dashcam footage."
