Private renters in Dorset are being asked what they know about new tenant rights.

Dorset Council has opened an anonymous survey to understand how tenants who rent from private landlords view the Renters’ Rights Act. The answers will be used to improve the information and support offered to people in the private rented sector.

The short survey asks what type of housing respondents rent and checks their understanding of the rights provided by the Act. It also asks people to judge several statements as true or false.

Renters are being asked whether they know what to do if they believe a landlord is breaking the new legislation. The council also wants to know what extra support would help tenants understand the changes.

Councillor Gill Taylor, Dorset Council’s Cabinet Member for Housing and Homelessness, said renters should be aware of the additional rights available to them. She said the Act is “boosting tenant rights” and brings “clearer rules” for rent increases, eviction processes and repairs.

She said the survey should also show how advice and guidance can be improved, including information about challenging excessive rent rises and the need for landlords to give a reason for eviction.
