Bournemouth Town Council has approved a pilot scheme for festive displays in Charminster, Winton, Mooredown and Kinson, with councillors due to look again at the project next year and consider whether more areas could be added.
Councillor Bernadette Nanovo welcomed the plan but said it was “disappointing that Tuckton has been left out”, adding that investment in community spirit and local high streets should be shared fairly across Bournemouth.
She said town councils can provide local enhancements when larger authorities are under pressure from statutory services, including adult social care and children’s services, and can help support high streets.
The way the decision was brought forward was also questioned, after councillors said the proposal appeared as a late amendment with “little opportunity for proper scrutiny” before members were asked to support it.
Councillor Sara Armstrong said Christmas lights should support all communities, while Councillor George Farquhar said some members felt unable to back the plan without clearer due diligence, governance and collective decision making.
