Residents have discussed water pollution after E. coli levels rose in Christchurch Harbour.

Tom Hayes MP hosted the public meeting at Hengistbury Head Outdoors, where representatives from the outdoor centre and a microbiologist answered questions from local people about water safety in the harbour.

The meeting followed private talks involving the MP, DEFRA, the Water Minister and the Environment Agency, as well as local groups including Hengistbury Head Outdoors, HENRA, Christchurch Sailing Club and Christchurch Rowing Club.

Mudeford Ferry and Christchurch Harbour and Marine Society were also involved in those discussions, which focused on pollution concerns and the needs of people who use the harbour for sport, travel and recreation.

Mr Hayes said, “We need to prevent pollution and protect people using the harbour,” and added that local water users were seeking more monitoring, upgraded infrastructure and bathing water protection.

He also said the Government was banning bonuses for water company bosses when they fail, and said there was “more to do” to ensure the water sector serves the public.
