Four large nitrous oxide canisters have been found near a children’s play area in Winton.

The canisters were discovered in undergrowth during a litter pick at Pine Road Park, which was led by ward councillors, and the find will be reported to police as intelligence through regular meetings.

Councillor Chris Rigby said it was “especially disappointing” to find the canisters where children play, and asked anyone with information to tell councillors or police, including anonymously, about what happened at the park.

Councillor Simon Bull, who has worked with residents and police on drug related issues, said substance use appears to be becoming more visible, and called for better mental health support, early intervention, education and harm reduction.

Councillor Andy Hadley, BCP Council cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy, thanked the volunteers and said people want parks and green spaces “that our communities can be proud of”.

He added that nitrous oxide canisters should not be put in public litter bins because they can pose a “fire or safety risk”, and should instead be taken to recycling centres or reported to the council for safe collection.
