A Bournemouth bar can host a boxing event next month after the council approved temporary permission.
Harry’s Lounge and Bar Coast nightclub applied for a temporary event notice for October 17 because its current licence does not include boxing or wrestling entertainment.
Dorset Police objected because officers were concerned about the area’s history of alcohol related crime and antisocial behaviour. The application was heard by BCP Council’s licensing committee on September 15, and licensing officers later confirmed it had been approved.
The committee was told the ring will be inside Bar Coast, while boxers and trainers will use a separate preparation area upstairs at Harry’s Lounge.
The venues will work with Sandbanks Security, with 10 SIA staff covering entrances, exits and dispersal. Plans have also been strengthened for violence against women and girls, counter terrorism, searches, incident management and public safety.
Tickets will identify which boxer spectators support, which organisers say will help predict numbers for each bout and manage staggered dispersal.
Owner James Gordon said: “For me, this is bigger than one boxing event.” He added that working with police and licensing had helped introduce measures “that will make this event, our venues and future events safer”.
