Bournemouth Town Council is running a pilot project which will see displays installed in Charminster, Kinson, Moordown and Winton, with 80 columns lit across the four communities during the festive period.
Neighbourhood shopping parades in Bournemouth have been without displays since winter 2023, when BCP Council cancelled funding for Christmas lights to save money, and the new scheme is intended to test future options.
The town council says the pilot will examine operational, financial and community benefits in areas that currently have limited or no seasonal decorations, before any decision is made on expanding the approach.
Funding is expected to come mainly from Neighbourhood Community Infrastructure Levy receipts, which are generated by local housing and commercial developments, and Councillor Mark Anderson, who presented the motion, said the lights “bring people together” and “support our local high streets”.
After the 2026 festive season, the council plans to review community feedback and practical arrangements before considering whether to extend festive lighting to other parts of Bournemouth in future years.
