Dorset Police said the report was received yesterday after the man was found in the area near the quay. The coastguard and the force’s marine unit recovered the body from the water, and detectives are now trying to identify him.

The man is described as white, around five feet eight inches tall, of medium to stocky build and believed to be in his 50s. He had short brown hair, was unshaven and had no beard.

He was wearing a full wetsuit with black swim leggings, black swimming shoes and a navy blue Adidas T shirt with red writing over the top. Police said he also had grey Speedo goggles on his forehead.

Detective Inspector Edmund Murray, of BCP CID, said officers are investigating the circumstances. He said there is “nothing to suggest it is suspicious at this time”, but the man has not been identified “despite extensive enquiries”.

Anyone who knows who he may be is asked to contact Dorset Police online or by calling 101.
