Parents and carers across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being asked to check children’s MMRV vaccinations.
The vaccine protects against measles, mumps, rubella and varicella, which is chickenpox, and the council says two doses are needed to give children the strongest protection available through the NHS childhood immunisation programme.
Local uptake for both doses is around 88 per cent, compared with the national target of 95 per cent, which is the level needed to give stronger protection across the population and reduce the risk of outbreaks.
Families who are unsure can check a child’s Red Book, use the NHS App, or contact their GP practice, with catch-up appointments available for children who have missed one or both doses.
Dr Ben Oxley, a GP at The Adam Practice, said vaccination remains “one of the safest and most effective ways” to protect children from serious infectious diseases, and said two doses provide the best protection.
Councillor David Brown, BCP Council Cabinet Member for Health and Wellbeing, said keeping up with vaccinations is a simple step that makes a “significant difference” to a child’s health and wellbeing.
