BCP campaign tackles waste in wrong bins

Residents across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole are being given clearer recycling guidance after council checks found many items in recycling bins could not be recycled properly. A new BCP Council campaign is helping residents put the right items in recycling bins. The council says almost 79 per cent of people across Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole already recycle regularly, but checks on bins found almost a fifth of recycling waste could not be recycled because items were wrong, dirty, wet or not empty.

Let’s Recycle Right, which is supported by WRAP, gives residents simple advice so more material from homes and flats can be made into new products instead of going into general rubbish.

Councillor Andy Hadley, portfolio holder for climate response, environment and energy, said: “Most residents want to get their recycling right.” He said “emptying, rinsing, and drying items” before they go in the bin can help more material be recycled.

The council is using leaflets, bin stickers, bin tags, posters, signs, website updates and social media. The campaign’s four steps ask residents to empty, rinse, dry and check their recycling before putting it out.

Extra guidance is also planned for communal properties, where the council says recycling can be harder to manage.
