BCP Council says its officers will check whether retailers are following the ban, after an emergency alert warned of a ‘very high risk of wildfires nationally’ across England and Wales last week.

The alert asked residents, landowners and visitors to avoid activity that could start fires, including disposable barbecues, firepits, garden incinerators and fireworks, during the heightened risk across local open spaces.

Councillor Andy Hadley, cabinet member for climate response, environment and energy, said the council would work with local retailers to raise awareness of the ‘new restrictions’ across the BCP area.

He said officers would visit premises in Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole to check compliance, while existing Public Spaces Protection Orders already prohibit barbecues and fires near heathlands and clifftops locally.

Businesses selling disposable barbecues can be reported through the Citizens Advice Consumer Service, and the council says fines remain in place for anyone who puts the area at risk locally.
