Brittany Ferries’ Barfleur has made its final sailing from Poole to Cherbourg after more than 30 years on the route.

The cross-Channel ferry left Poole shortly after 8.30am, bound for Cherbourg in Normandy.

Dozens of people watched as Barfleur crossed Poole Harbour and passed Sandbanks for the final time.

Brittany Ferries announced earlier this year it would sell the vessel and end the route.

The company says passenger numbers on the service have fallen by 70 per cent since 2002, while freight has dropped by 94 per cent.

Barfleur first entered service between Poole and Cherbourg in April 1992.

A company spokesperson said the decision was based on commercial viability, with not enough passengers or freight using the route.
