Repair work is continuing at Charminster Library after asbestos was removed from the roof.

The Bournemouth site has been closed since December 2025, following a partial ceiling collapse, and BCP Council said progress has now been made to assess and repair the building while it remains shut on health and safety grounds.

Councillor Andy Martin said: “We want to see residents return to Charminster Library,” and added that asbestos found in the roof after the collapse had “recently” been removed from the site.

He said the council remains committed to exploring ways to reopen the library, with residents to be kept updated, and confirmed that Winton and Castlepoint libraries are open as alternatives.

Councillor Alasdair Keddie said mid December would mark a full year since the closure, and said it was “good that progress has been made” but that further work is still needed.

He also said it was vital to keep pressure on the reopening, as the library continues to be unavailable to Charminster residents while repair work is carried out at the site.
