BCP Council said the closure from Cooper Dean to Ashley Heath had been due to begin at eight o'clock, but it has been moved to 11pm after AFC Bournemouth’s Europa League match against AC Milan in Bournemouth.

The council linked the decision to the expected matchday traffic for both sets of fans rather than any change to the maintenance scheme itself and said it was designed to help journeys after the fixture.

The later start means supporters heading north after the game should have more time to use the route before the closure begins while crews prepare to carry out the planned maintenance overnight.

The works will go ahead from the revised time only if the weather allows, so drivers using the Spur Road northbound later tonight may still need to plan for disruption before setting off from the area.
