The A31 has reopened after fire repairs restored key safety features on the route.

The road has been closed for almost two weeks.

National Highways said resurfacing has been completed, with 800 metres of new safety barriers installed and 1,500 metres of boundary fencing replaced following damage caused by a fire that burned for more than a week.

Kat Saradinova, National Highways’ Head of Scheme Delivery, said the repairs were “substantial” and conditions were “challenging”, adding that fencing work was needed to help stop animals getting on to the A31.

Temporary protection remains around parapets and safety barriers damaged by the fire, with a 40mph limit on the eastbound carriageway until permanent repairs are completed during future overnight closures at a later date.

Lane 1 will remain closed on the westbound carriageway with a 50mph limit so fire services can safely leave their compound while they remain on site, and laybys are also still closed for now.

Drivers are also being reminded that the M3 junction 9 roundabout, several nearby roads and the northbound A3 in Guildford will be closed this weekend, so journeys may need checking before travel.
