New government funding for dementia research has been welcomed by Bournemouth East MP Tom Hayes.

The £48m investment is intended to speed up the development of treatments for dementia, which affects nearly one million people across the UK and places emotional and financial pressure on families and carers.

Bournemouth has a direct link to the work through Bournemouth University’s Ageing and Dementia Research Centre, which brings together researchers who focus on improving life for older people, people living with dementia and their families.

The government funding is aimed at research rather than direct care, but the announcement has been welcomed locally because Bournemouth families and carers are among those dealing with the day-to-day impact of the condition alongside people living with dementia.

Mr Hayes said he had met many local families who have been affected by dementia, and he hoped the announcement would “lift them” as research moves towards “effective treatments” and wider access to scientific breakthroughs.
