20mph limit is proposed for Poole roads

Plans for a 20mph speed limit on 14 Poole roads would support a quieter walking and cycling route between Alder Road and Coy Pond if approved by the council cabinet. A lower speed limit could be introduced on 14 Poole roads to support safer travel. A lower speed limit could be introduced on 14 Poole roads to support safer travel.

The proposal would cut speeds between Alder Road and Coy Pond, creating a quieter route for people walking and cycling towards Bournemouth town centre and linking with the council’s Local Cycling and Walking Infrastructure Plan, which councillors adopted in 2022.

Council officers said the changes would also help families travelling to Heatherlands Primary and Bishop Aldhelm’s CE Primary, while a report described Yarmouth Road as “busy and noisy” and said it can feel like an “intimidating environment”.

The scheme includes improved pavements, wayfinding signs, traffic calming and new pedestrian crossings in the corridor, with safer routes over main roads that currently act as barriers for walkers and cyclists.

The proposed 20mph limit would cover streets including Apple Close, Bourne Valley Road, Gordon Road, Surrey Road, Wolterton Road and Yarmouth Road, along with several nearby residential roads across the wider Bourne Valley area.

A public consultation received 54 responses, with 30 objections, 21 in support and three general comments, and the Transportation Advisory Group has recommended the proposal to the council cabinet for final approval.
